Your latest great wine bargain?

by Jenise » Wed Feb 18, 2015 9:24 pm

I'm always so jealous of you guys who wax triumphant after fishing good things out of remainder bins--jealous often of the wine itself but more fundamentally jealous of you who have retailers that actually have remainder bins. But hey, I finally scored something worth crowing about! Six bottles of 2010 Novy Syrah Garys' Vineyard priced $14.95! What's more, the night before I tasted it in a blind line-up of Northern Rhones, and it did not stand out as a New World ringer. In fact, it just stood out period as being one of the better wines of the night.

Wow!

My astute wife came home with two Ch. La Foncalpre, (Monbazillac) @ $8.99/btl a while ago. She loves any sweetie, but particularly Sauternes. She wasn't familiar with Monbazillac, but loved the color and thought it might be semillon. We opened one at a tasting class I held for her friends, and it was terrific - particularly for the price. Looking forward to the other soon.

2010 Ridge Lytton Springs for $21.99. I bought the two remaining bottles. The 2012 Lytton was $39. I'm not sure why the 2010 was so cheap. Sub-par vintage? I do not recall ever having a Ridge that I considered a poor value so I had not problem taking the risk.

I'm rather proud of some 96 Rene Engel Grand Crus I scored for about 130 USD. One out of the four was corked, but the others rocked!

Alas, no deals in this town or region. Have to go to big cities for that.

Hi Bill!
Nice score.
I'm certainly no stranger to closeouts but I've never seen a CFE there.

Ha! Charles, nope 750s of the regular CFE.

I'm constantly amazed by how few people out here have even heard of Trimbach.

Basically the case here--there's very little competition and almost no independent sellers. I just happened to have been shopping at the local Food Co-op where the wine guy sometimes takes prudent chances on distributor close-outs--he probably picked up the Novy for $10.

I posted on this wine a few months ago but it is worth repeating. 2011 Pfeffingen Dry Riesling was purchased at the Party Source in Newport Ky. for $4.00. I only bought 2 bottles but after trying one I should have bought 2 cases. Excellent wine with lots of white fruit flavors, great acidity and dry or almost dry. 12% abv and from the Pfalz. imported by Rudi Wiest lots of tartrate crystals

1977 Croft Vintage Port

by Robert Helms » Wed Feb 25, 2015 4:07 pm

In about 1984, I bought six cases of 1977 Croft Vintage Port for $5 a bottle in a wine shop on a strip mall in Savannah. Georgia. I was there to visit my wife's family, wandered into the store by accident, bought a bottle to make sure it was real, went back and bought all they had. It turned out that the store had bought 10 cases on a deep, deep discount close-out and a military guy and I bought all of it between us. It was (and probably still is) extremely good, if not quite to the level of Taylors and Fonseca 1977.

Robert, that beats the rest of us hands-down. I remember being pretty proud of finding the Fonseca 77's circa 1991-2 for $60 at a Liquor Store That Time Forgot kind of place in remote Alaska. Of course, the price wasn't so remarkable as just stumbling over such a wine for sale. They knew not what they had.
