Whatever happened to Scholium Project?

by Jenise » Mon Feb 16, 2015 3:44 pm

A few years ago, they were mentioned here often but I haven't seen a reference in some time. No fun any more?

I remember the guy visited here and I had a great lunch and tasting with him. Haven't had another taste since. :(

To my knowledge the wines are still very much around and still very interesting in the same way as before. But Abe appears to sell in an unconventional approach (mailing lists where he chooses what you get) and perhaps he doesn't make a whole lot of wine so the retail availability is limited? (I don't know about quantities)

Plus of course the wines are unique and works-in-progress, so it makes sense that the masses of wine geeks haven't all become close followers.

He also makes a number of wines that are very high in alcohol, which is poison in the geek community these days.

I bought and shared one of his orange wines with Bill Spohn's group, and everyone loved it. Around the same time I also bought a gewurz in a bottle-shape I've never seen wine in before that I'm afraid of for I-can't-remember-what reason. Might be alcohol in addition to the fact that I'm just not a fan of gewurz.

I posted a note last month about a Solano County, California Petit Sirah I found quite refreshing.

I'm sorry, I missed that one. Amusing to find a Petite Sirah 'refreshing', isn't it?

They are out there, though. The Dry Creek Vineyards wine was quite lively! 8)

The name reminded me of "scrotum", so I couldn't take it seriously.

Abe is a Classics professor, James. Very in-tuh-leck-shul!

Not sure if he would be offended or amused by your misreading!

I used to buy Scholium Project regularly at a wine store in NYC (Union Square Wines); however, my wine purchases have been mostly on line for the past 7 or 8 years, and I haven't made a point of searching for it, but a quick search on Wine-Searcher turned up 10 pages of retailers with Scholium Project in their inventories.

Haven't really heard good things about them, plus things like sauvignon blanc at 16% alcohol? No thanks. The wines are not cheap, and the producer comments feel a little academic and off-putting to my ears.

I like the producer comments, but wines just generally carry too much abv for me

They are hit and miss w/r/t the alcohol, for sure. The Petit Sirah I mentioned was not out of line with current market numbers, though. And certainly retained some acid.
