SWR: River Cruising in Wine Regions

by Peter May » Mon Feb 16, 2015 1:54 pm

Don't recall the subject being mentioned before, but after being introduced to river cruising by friends we were converts.

Americans have been the vast majority of guests with Viking River Cruises that we've been on the Rhine, Danube and Douro.

Next month we are taking the Bordeaux trip which Viking launched last year.

Anyone been on it, or intend going on it?

I'm thinking about a Rhine or Danube cruise but haven't done any of their cruises yet.

I've always assumed that it would be hard to visit winemakers of great interest as a part of these cruises; that one would be limited to more mass-market arrangements. Not so?

Hi Charles

You are correct, the tours I'm talking of are not specific wine tours but go through wine regions. The wineries visited to far have not been big name ones -- except for one of the Port lodges. On the Douro trip I lso enjoyed seeing for the first time port tongs being used to open some old bottles of crusted Port, and of course drinking them afterwards.

On the Bordeaux tour we will be visiting Chateau Siaurac (Lalande Pomerol) and hosted by the owner, and having dinner at Chateau Kirwan, Margaux 3rd Growth.

There are some cruises designated as special interest where the wine ones do feature winemakers & etc
