WTN: Wines from friend's birthday with Petrus '85 etc.

Casa Marin Cipreses Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc 2011 - A fairly full-bodied Sauvignon Blanc. Pineapple, lime, and as it warms up, green pepper. Good ripe fruit in this. I'm not a Sauvignon Blanc fan but this is rather nice.

Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame 1995 - Oxidative style. Nutty, sourdough flavors. Steely and dry. A bit of coffee. A little over medium-bodied. Only complaint is it's a little weak on the finish. There might be a bit more aging potential but I think it would probably be best to drink up.

Louis Chavy Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatieres 2008 - Just a touch over medium-bodied. Very light oaky/buttery flavor. Chalky. Pineapple, green apple and a bit of lemon. Good length on this. Not bad at all.

Chateau Palmer Alter Ego 2008 - Rich and smooth. Classic Bordeaux pencil shavings. Very complex. Smoked meat, black olive, blood, iron, bittersweet chocolate. Loamy/earthy character to this. Needs more time for better integration but this is already very impressive now.

Chateau Petrus 1985 - Very good fill and cork on this bottle. A little pruney on the nose but there's also good ripe crunchy fruit. Plum, coffee, dried herbs and tobacco. Acidity a little on the high side. Very soft, dusty tannins. Definitely a few years past prime but still holding up. Good thing this was opened already.

Chateau d'Issan 2005 - Very dark. Meaty wine with lots of back fruit. Plum and black cherry mostly. Cocoa powder making an appearance at the finish. Pretty soft tannins. Well made, if not very exciting.

Verité La Muse Sonoma 2009 - Had a very small taste of this. Strong Coca Cola on the nose. Some curry spice. Big wine. Decanted about an hour but still tight. I might be a little unfair in my rating as I had very little of it and it came after some pretty fine Bordeauxs. 96 points by Parker, apparently, but I'm not seeing it.

Chateau Rieussec 2003 - This has shed some of its baby fat since I last had this so it no longer seems excessively, almost cloyingly sweet. Much better balance and complexity at this point. Honey, candied fruit, marmalade and dried apricots. Candied orange slices. Tropical fruit. Excellent.

I have had the pleasure of drinking Petrus 3 times, the '70, '71 and '75. All were drinking very well in the last decade. I wonder if the cork on that '85 was not so good.

Hi David,

The cork was good and I'm sure storage in Manila was good. But this was a gift given by someone several years back so it's possible the one who gave it didn't keep it well.

That could explain it.
