Tried this wine last night:
1. Mayacamas Zin LateHrvst NapaVlly (17 1/2%) 1984: Med.dark somewhat murky/brown color; very strong overripe/jammy/plummy/boysenberry/Zin some alcoholic/fumey rather pencilly/vanilla/oak/cedary slight earthy/dusty complex nose; soft some hot/alcoholic/porty overripe/jammy/plummy/boysenberry/blackberry/Zin fairly sweet (5%?) some vanilla/cedary/pencilly/Am.oak bit dusty/earthy complex flavor w/ light/gentle tannins; very long overripe/jammy/boysenberry/blackberry/Zin fairly sweet complex finish w/ light/smooth tannins; quite overripe but not straying into the raisened/pruney territory; no signs of oxidation and plenty of fruit; the alcohol dominates & it's pretty porty but still has loads of fruit; the sopresatta picante and the 'Nduja really tones down the wine and makes it much more palatable. $16.00

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. Mayacamas is generally recognized as producing the first Calif LH Zin w/ their '68 from NapaVlly fruit. I last had it in the mid-'80's and it was very raisened/pruney and on its last legs. This LH was in much better shape at 20 yrs of age.
Ridge & DavidBruce also produced some LH Zins in the late '60's, but not sure they labeled them as such.
The original '68 came from NapaVlly fruit, but not sure which vnyd. Their next LHZin was the '72, made from Ed&Kay Baldanelli's ShenandoahVlly vnyd (now owned by BillEaston I believe). They made several more thru the '70's. I believe this '84 was the last LHZin Mayacamas made. Not sure what NapaVlly vnyd it came from.
