WTN: Wine deal of the Century

by Jim Grow » Thu Jan 29, 2015 10:09 pm

2011 Pfeffengen Dry Riesling from the Pfalz, bought recently at The Party Source in Bellvue Ky. for the astounding price of $4.00. I bought only a couple of bottles as I was skeptical. Not to worry, it is the real deal. Pale straw in color with a mostly peach nose, the flavors were a mix of peach and citrus. abv of 12%. This bottle was kept overnight in our freezer by mistake and when discovered was carefully thawed. The screw cap was slightly extruded and the freezing process had forced a lot of fine tartrate sediment into the wine. When opened tonight it was completely sound with a bit of spritzness but without evident bubbles. I should have bought a case. I would have posted on the Wine Focus QPR site but thought this would be seen by more viewers. I have no idea why this wine was priced so low.

Probably a distributor close out. Dry Riesling remains a tough sell in the USA.
