WTN: 2013 Leitz Rottland Riesling

by David M. Bueker » Mon Jan 26, 2015 10:24 pm

2013 Weingut Josef Leitz Rüdesheimer Berg Rottland Riesling Hinterhaus - Germany, Rheingau (1/26/2015)
Drank over 2 nights, and while I was impressed on night one, I was blown away on night two. On the first night it was rather statuesque, showing lemon, herb and mineral tones. Tonight it had developed tangerine aromas and flavors, and added a layer of richness on the palate. It still retained the brightness from night one, so overall it was the whole package, threading the needle of elegance and depth.

What does Hinterhaus mean? I've enjoyed the Berg Rottland in past. This sounds great

I am not exactly sure. I presume it's an old parcel name in the larger Rottland vineyard.

It really is quite fine. I love what Johannes does with his dry wines. I don't buy enough of them.

Translated literally I think Hinterhaus means "the house behind" and could refer to a shed or smaller building. I need to obtain more Leitz wines--I may have to order them from DC or somewhere since I don't see many of them in the Triangle area.

Confirmed through an older Terry Theise catalog, that Hinterhaus is a parcel name within the Rottland. Confirmed through an exchange with Johannes, that this photo was taken at the base of the Hinterhaus parcel:
