WTN: Two Old Zins...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Mon Jan 26, 2015 11:44 am

Tried these two from my stash last night, after the first two Zins were pretty dead:
1. LambornFamilyVnyds Zin HowellMtn/NapaVlly (13.3%; 2050 cs) RobertLamborn/StHelena 1989: Med.light color w/ light bricking; rather earthy/dusty/OV light blackberry/Zin strong Am.oak/vanilla/Bourbon strong mushroomy/HowellMtn/earthy/rustic slight bretty rather interesting/perfumed nose; fairly tart rather earthy/rough/mushroomy dusty/OV light blackberry/Zin bit complex/oldZin/pencilly flavor w/ drying/astringent tannins; med.long rather pencilly/cedary/oldZin mushroomy/earthy/HM/rustic/rough light blackberry/Zin finish w/ astringent/dryed-out tannins; still has some life left but drying out and on its last legs; speaks of old HM Zin some like the old Ridges.$9.00

2. HoodRiverVnyds Zin Oregon (14.8%) HoodRiver/OR 1987: Med.light rather brown/murkey color; rather herbal/earthy/dusty/OV light vanilla/pencilly/Am.oak light spicy/raspberry/Zin complex nose; fairly tart some bright/raspberry/Zin strong Am.oak/pencilly/cedary/vanilla somewhat earthy/dusty/OV quite herbal/thyme flavor w/ light/astringent tannins; very long some raspberry/Zin/bright/spicy rather herbal/thyme/earthy some Am.oak/vanilla/pencilly finish w/ light/astringent tannins; drying out some but lots of raspberry/Zin fruit for an old Zin and still offers some pleasure; very strong herbal note makes it an unusual Zin.

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. LambornFamily: I used to buy a lot of their Zins & Cabs back in the '80's, but dropped them when the prices started to rise drastically. Haven't had a LFV wine in yrs, now. HeidiPetersonBarrett is their winemaker.

2. HoodRiver: I have no idea where or why I bought this wine and no recollection of what it was like in its youth. This was the first wnry in what is now the ColumbiaVllyGorge AVA. I gather they are still in business but no longer making Zin. I was quite surprised as to how good this survivor was.
