Small vertical of Coffaro Block 4

by John Treder » Mon Jan 26, 2015 12:25 am

To celebrate my birthday last weekend I opened 4 bottles of Coffaro Block 4 - '02 through '05.
It took a while the finish. :)
The '02, which had the foam cork, was spoiled. It was sort of weird, because it smelled Ok, and the first impression of the sip was Ok too, but when it got to the mid-palate everything went sort of ugly sour like baby spit-up. Too bad.
The other 3 bottles were screwcapped, and they were all in fine condition, looking dark purple with practically no rim clearing, and the distinctive DCV aroma.
The '05 was my original favorite, but over a couple of days the '04, which had started out with some rough tannin, smoothed out and showed the flavor depth and good length that make Block 4 a favorite wine for me. It went away first. The '03 and '05 were prettier, more aromatic, and softer on the palate initially, tasting much like you'd expect 3 or 4 years from a ripe vintage (which '04 and '05 were). Only it was over 10 years from vintage.
They started to break down a bit, showing some acidity and their alcohol after a couple of days.

Yup....my experience w/ Dave's wines under NeoCork has not been good, either.

When we visited Coffaro in 2008, we bought some Block 4 futures after tasting them in barrel..all long gone now but they were quite tasty and, if I recall correctly, under screwcap

Yes, Dave went 100% screwcap in '04.
