WTN: Alpha Estate Xinomavro.

by Bob Parsons Alberta » Thu Jan 22, 2015 3:21 pm

After some cellar "tidy-up", I came across some 2005/2008 Alpha Estate Xinomavro so decided to crack the `05 last night. Friend on mine was surprised to hear that I was sampling this one, but after a few visits to Greece with family in the late `90s, I am well aware of the potential over there.
The predominant grape variety in Macedonia is a native red called Xinomavro, (meaning "acid-black"). The wines made from Xinomavro are known for their superb aging potential and their rich tannic character. Their complex aromas combine red fruits with hints of olives, spices and dried tomatoes.

TN: 2005 Alpha Estate Xinomavro, Macedonia Greece.

Good natural cork, 13.5% alc, cellared 3 yrs, $32 Cdn.

Darkish dull garnet in the glass, on the nose the wine is showing some aged characteristics including leather, raisins, earthy tones. The tomato-ey nose reference was there in the background along with some herbal component. Day 2 might be interesting as I think this red will really evolve overnight.
Initial entry thought was dry, medium tannins, big wine quite unlike any red i have drank recently! Plenty of red fruit, olives, earthy tones, very good acidity. There is some black pepper here on the finish with some spice. Overall a good sense of place, will revisit to check the probable progress.

That sounds a really interesting bottle, Bob, quite different from the run of the mill. Fat chance of finding it here, though.

This sounds right up my alley! I love 'peppery" wines!

Thanks Tim and Brian. I was thinking at one time "hope this is not going to turn out new world style". Certainly quite different from the Naoussa Xin I tasted a while back but I think this one is more true to old world form.

As expected, held up very well overnight. I am happy I am cellaring these wines as I think Alpha Estate might use a lot of oak.

Bob,

Was this the "old vine" version, or there was only one label in 2005?
I have a couple of bottles from 2006 and 2008, including the old vine version.

Eli, no was just the regular wine. I see on CT thought that there was a Reserve and a VV.
The `08, I have the Hedgehog but have seen the VV downtown.
Thanks for the interest.
