After some cellar "tidy-up", I came across some 2005/2008 Alpha Estate Xinomavro so decided to crack the `05 last night. Friend on mine was surprised to hear that I was sampling this one, but after a few visits to Greece with family in the late `90s, I am well aware of the potential over there.
The predominant grape variety in Macedonia is a native red called Xinomavro, (meaning "acid-black"). The wines made from Xinomavro are known for their superb aging potential and their rich tannic character. Their complex aromas combine red fruits with hints of olives, spices and dried tomatoes.
TN: 2005 Alpha Estate Xinomavro, Macedonia Greece.
Good natural cork, 13.5% alc, cellared 3 yrs, $32 Cdn.
Darkish dull garnet in the glass, on the nose the wine is showing some aged characteristics including leather, raisins, earthy tones. The tomato-ey nose reference was there in the background along with some herbal component. Day 2 might be interesting as I think this red will really evolve overnight.
Initial entry thought was dry, medium tannins, big wine quite unlike any red i have drank recently! Plenty of red fruit, olives, earthy tones, very good acidity. There is some black pepper here on the finish with some spice. Overall a good sense of place, will revisit to check the probable progress.
