Egon Muller, Bosconia and a suckling pig!

by Bob Parsons Alberta » Mon Jan 19, 2015 5:10 pm

Last Saturday night I was present at the annual Xmas party for the staff of Devine Wines downtown. I help out at the store with various tastings and other events. My guest Denise and I had a fab evening at Sabor Divino, a terrific Portuguese restaurant here in town. The food was exceptional..appetizers included Piri Piri Shrimp, Mussels, Bacalhau Cakes, Calamari. For mains we all tried Roast Suckling Pig, Grilled Sea Bass, Lobster risotto and a roast chicken dish.

The various wines (not all mentioned here) all matched the food in a thoughtful manner. We started of with a dry champagne from Thierry Massin and them moved onto 3 German Rieslings. The 2011 Egon Muller Scharzhofberger Kabinett was superb....off-dry, lime apple on the nose, great equality of acidity and tropical fruits. Next up was the Muller 2011 Wiltinger braune Kupp Spatlese which was very well received. Light yellow in color, nose of lemon, ripe apples and a hint of keroscene. Quite concentrated on entry, very good acidity indeed, more apple flavors, lime and great length.
Four reds were served but the highlight was the `03 Bosconia.. Pretty good for an off-vintage year, soft tannins, cherry and red berry fruits. A Ch Talbot (not sure of the vintage) was at its peak, must have come from the owners cellar. All in all, a great evening..wonderful company and a nice social time for one and all.

I have had this wine once or twice and don't really remember many details. But I think it's safe to assume that there is plenty of 'peak' ahead.

Although I guess the term is subjective, so who am I to argue with your preferences.

I know what you mean by that "at its peak", Bob. A wine like that goes through many phases and some very young wines with ageing potential can be delightful very young and then go into a sulky phase to emerge later with greater complexity. Vouvray often does that. Sometimes I think I prefer the young beauties, particularly white  ......

Pity you can't remember the Talbot vintage.
