Botrytis Chardonnay Question

Many years ago I had a bottle of (I think 1996) Domaine de la Bongran Chardonnay, from Thevenet in the Macon, that was so profound that I can still remember the lush fruit, with a touch of Botrytis and excellent acidity to balance. I think it may still be available in markets like Wash. D.C./NYC/L.A./San Francisco etc. but not in the vinous backwater of Ohio. Does anyone else make a chardonnay with that touch of Botrytis on a regular basis? When I was last in D.C. it was such a short visit that I overlooked searching for it. That Bongran came across as dry but may have had a speck of RS, which was just fine by me.

Sonoma-Cutrer makes one. Half bottles only, I believe.

Had a recent release just a few months ago. It was pretty impressive if you like that kind of thing.

Don't know how much is released...and of course it is made only in years where they get the botrytis infection just right, but since SCV is right on the banks of the Russian River, fog and botrytis can happen fairly easily.

Tough part of doing botrytised chard, I've been told by winemakers, is getting the right amount of acidity in there. Tricky.

d'Arenberg from Australia makes a Stump Jump Sticky Chardonnay. But this is a full-on dessert wine. Kracher from Austria also makes a Chardonnay Trockenbeerenauslese.

I've tasted the wine you have mentioned and I might even have a bottle left in my cellar. I enjoyed the wine with certain starters especially in the summer. It's not for everyone, I believe there is a little residual sugar left but the acid balances.

I've had the botrytis Thevenet Macons before (think 01 and 03) - interesting wines, though odd at table.
Bouchaine I think makes a Cali Chard with botrytis, reminds me of the canned fruit salad in syrup of my 60s/70s childhood.

I've had a Late Harvest Chardonnay made by Jed Steele but I don't think it is something he produces regularly.

the best one i have ever had by far is made not far from you. Arnie Esterer at Markko vineyards just across the border in North East, PA. is a brilliant winemaker. all his chards are superb but the late harvest with botrytis is amazing.

David, I agree that Markko is the finest winery in Ohio and have had his Riesling many years ago but did not know he made a Botrytis Chardonnay. Is that wine made in a dry or semi-dry style? That was the focus of my question. Unfortunately I rarely get up to NE Ohio and for some reason central and southern Ohio wine shops do not carry his wines. I'll have to try harder.

it is sweet. i had several vintages but not all are still available. couldn't believe what i was tasting - didn't realize chard could do all that.
