Very sad. I met him once when I visited Lebanon and once when he visited Finland and both remain among the best tastings I have attended. The tour at Musar was especially wonderful since Serge and Gaston took many hours just to show us around and gave us tastes of young and old wines. All this for a total nobody who just came came knocking at the door while on a long tour of the Near East.

I see on Jancis Robinson's site that it was an accident while swimming in Mexico.

How sad. :(

Ars longa, vita brevis. May his art live long.

I can't find anything on The Google. Can anyone post a link to any non-paywall news?

Thanks, Otto. It appears that most of the commentary and condolences are moving on the wine Twitterverse. If I copied it correctly, this link should follow the posts:

So very sad. I hope his sons will be able to continue his legacy of winemaking.

Sad news, indeed. Serge Hochar managed to produce one of the world's great wines from the terroir at Château Musar. One has to hope that his heirs will follow his example. I have read worrying reports somewhere that they were impatient with his tying up so much working capital in maturing his wines.
