WTN: Holiday wines/short notes

by Jim Grow » Mon Dec 29, 2014 4:32 pm

Wines tasted from my visit to NW Ohio; from memory so not much detail

2013 Antucura Cab. from Argentina; definite cab. flavors and almost ready or will cellar 8+ yrs.

2010 Beringer Knights valley Napa Cab.; surprisingly mellow, medium bodied, good balance and great mid-term future

2011 Barmes-buecher gewürztraminer from Rosenberg Vy. Alsace; labeled almost as sweet as scale goes but did not know this until wine arrived. Opened as a desert wine and functioned perfectly as that. Lots of spicey pear and apricot flavors carried along on good (not great) acidity. I just wish it was dry or drier. With 11 more I'll see if sweetness declines over time.

2001 Dr. Heidemanns-Bergweiler Bernkasteler Badstube Rieslfing Beerenauslese; abv of 9.5% and my wine of the Holidays!! Wonderful apricot flavors with a medium straw color. Excellent acidity to balance great depth of fruit.

2009 Oakville Terraces Cabernet Sauvignon; from Napa Valley, decanted for 8 hours and glad I did. Nice cab fruit and still a bit tight. I can't expect decanting to solve what cellar time can do. 14.3% abv

2007 Arcadian Sleepy Hollow Pinot Noir; ready to be consumed with with plenty of sour/sweet cherry in reserve and a bit of damp earth for complexity. Nice. 13.9%abv

2010 Elyse Zinfandel, Morisoli Vy. Napa Valley, Rutherford; wonderfully mellow, drinking more like a 20 yr. old napa cab. without the cassis. great balance/ great underststed bramble fruit. Can age probably 10 yrs. but will be all gone by 2016. 14.5%

2012 McCrostie Chardonnay from ??? Cal. 14.1 % abv. Starts out with some light pear and minerality and 1/2 hr. later and warmer, blossoms with some tropical flavors and greater depth. Enjoyable both ways.

2002 Strub Riesling Kabinett from Niersteiner Pettenthal; in great shape and a nice sipper while playing euchre, Nice peach flavors with 9.5% abv.

2012 Beringer PR Chardonnay; huge wine with massive pear and citrus fruit balanced by lots of acidity. Not for the faint of heart! 14.7% abv.

20211 Jemrose Wines, Cardiac Cuvee; nice Rhone quaffer with 90% Syrah, 8% Grenache and 2% Viognier. abv of 13.2%

2005 Sempre Vive Napa Valley Miscela (Bordeaux blend); this wine was opened and consumed immediately and should have been decanted. Very dark color with muted black fruit nose and palate. Might have become quite interesting. I'll never know.

I've had that Elyse Morisoli Zinfandel in previous vintages and agree that it can be quite attractive.
