WTN: Bottom Feeding @ TraderJoe's..(short/boring)

by TomHill » Mon Dec 29, 2014 12:52 pm

Some new wines showed up at TJ's last week, so thought I'd give them a try:
1. VinTJS Sangiovese SonomaCnty (14.4%) LiberatedWineCo/GlenEllen 2010: Med.light ruby red color; light cherry/Sangio slight herbal/weedy/dusty light oak pleasant enough nose; quite tart earthy/dusty/cherry/Sangio light oak flavor w/ light/raspy tannins; med.short light cherry/Sangio/dusty/earthy light oak finish w/ some raspy tannins; speaks quietly of Sangio but rather bitey/raspy/rough on the palate; OK w/ pizza, perhaps, but unthrilling.
$9.00 (TJ)

2. VinTJS Syrah MendoCnty (13.9%) DNA Vnyd/Ukiah 2012: Med.color; light earthy/tomatoey/MendoCnty light blackberry/blueberry/Syrah simple blah nose; soft light/vanilla/oak/pencilly light blueberry/Syrah bit earthy/tomatoey simple flavor w/ light/gentle tannins; med.short cherry/blueberry/Syrah bit tomatoey/earthy/MendoCnty light vanilla/oak finish w/ light tannins; speaks quietly of MendoCnty and Syrah but on the boring side; the best of a sorry threesome. $8.00 (TJ)

3. TraderJoe's Reserve GSM SonomaCnty (Lot#111; 50% Grenache/45% Syrah/5% Mourv; 14.5%) LiberatedWineCo/Healdsburg 2013: Med.light color; pretty/bright/strawberry/Grenache/spicy slight earthy/pungent simple/pleasant nose; very soft light strawberry/Grenache bit earthy slight vanilla/oak flavor w/ light/washed-out tannins; short light Grenache/strawberry/earthy slight vanilla/oak finish w/ light/vapid tannins; a low-impact/simple/rather vapid GSM blend that speaks mostly of Grenache. $10.00 (TJ)

And a wee BloodyPulpit:
1. I couldn't track down any info on LiberatedWineCo..Google let me down. But from the case, I do know it is Calif BW #21412. Somebody smarter than me (which is just about the entire populace) oughta be able to figure that one out.
The DnA Vnyd is none other than DennisPatton...a name I hadn't heard in many a moon. A "legendary" winemaker up in MendoCnty. Neat story on Dennis & Andrea:

2. These three wines are varietally correct, so for those who worship at the altar of varietal typicity, these wines are for you. But I found all three to be pretty low-impact/boring/vapid wines that made me think "Why bother?". Don't waste your taste buds on any of these wines. Life's too short to drink boring wines.

One More...

Tried this new wine this afternoon:
1. FoggyVeil RW SBC (HillsideSlctn; 75% Syrah/25% Grenache; 14.2%) FoggyVeilWines/SantaMaria 2012: Med.color; fairly strong blackberry/Syrah/plummy/juicy light oak attractive nose; bit soft/lush/ripe blackberry/Syrah/blueberry/plummy/fruity slight pencilly/oak flavor w/ light/gentle tannins; med. soft/lush/ripe/Syrah/blackberry/blueberry/plummy light oak finish w/ light tannins; much like the Qupe CentralCoast Syrah but less structured & less interesting; a pleasant enough Syrah at a fair price; would not buy again, though. $14.00 TJ)

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. Given the SantaMaria address, I would assume this came from the CentralCoastWineCoop of the Millers or lesser lots of Qupe CC Syrah. The back label sorta suggests that most of the grapes came from BienNacido..but not real sure.
