Anyone seen an electric wine-bottle opener?

by Robin Garr » Wed Dec 20, 2006 5:22 pm

A friend told me about this, but I'm having a hard time wrapping my mind around the idea: A wine opener (maybe like the Leverpull or Rabbit? I don't know) that works electrically rather than by hand.

I'm dubious - seems to me that it would have to be awfully powerful (and thus presumably expensive) to work well, and I'm thinking that one of those super-tight, small-bore Italian corks, or a plastic plug like the Supreme Corq could ruin one in a hurry.

I hate to hasten to judge that of which I know but naught, though, so I thought I'd ask: Have any of you heard of such a thing, or better yet, seen one in action? Any strong feelings on whether they're something to recommend or something to avoid?

I've seen them at wine shows, along with automatic aeration machines (blows air bubbles into wine) and other such nonsense.

See http://www.amazon.com/Oster-4207-Electr ... B000COC5MK

and http://www.comforthouse.com/wineopener1.html

and http://seabell.en.alibaba.com/product/5 ... pener.html

Of course, this is all old technology. For Wine 2.0 we need electric Stelvin openers. Or not.
