Tried these two last night at dinner:
1. Carlisle TheDerivative SonomaCnty WW (14.2%; Vines planted: 1886-1920; 54% Semillon/30% Muscadelle/16% Palomino; 330 cs) 2012: Med.yellow color; some earthy/stony rather waxy/fresh figs/Sem slight herbal/rosemary bit floral/carnations pretty classic Sem nose; rather tart fresh fig/waxy/Sem slight herbal/thyme/stony/mineral fairly lush/rich quite attractive flavor; very long waxy/figgy/Sem some stony/earthy slight herbal/thyme finish; quite an interesting old-timey Calif white; reminds me a lot of the old LouisMartini Semillons (MonteRosso?) from back in the '70's; would love to see what a bit of skin contact would do for this wine. $33.50

2. EdmundsStJohn Redneck 101 EaglePointRanch/MendoCnty RW (14.6%) ThirstyPagans w/ BigIdeas/SuiisunCity 2003: Very dark slight bricking color; some blackberry/Syrah/boysenberry classic tomatoey/MendoCnty some smokey/Rhonish/oak biit rustic attractive nose; slightly tart rather tomatoey/MendoCnty blackberry/Syrah/bit spicy rather earthy/tomatoey flavor w/ light/gritty tannins; long tomatoey/MendoCnty some spicy/blackberry/Syrah light smokey/Rhonish finish w/ light/coarse tannins; speaks mostly of Mendo terroir and quietly of Syrah; still holding on but not really evolving into something really interesting.

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. SauvignonVert: A bit of confusion on this grape it appears in Calif. There was once a considerable planting of SauvignonVert in Calif. I think the bulk of those old plantings of SV were DNA'd as Muscadelle of Bdx. There is a SauvignonVert in Friuli, also known as Sauvignonasse, which iis an alternate name for (Tojaji)Friulano. Whether any of the Calif SV has been DNA'd as Friulano, I'm not sure. Buut there is some usage of Friulano in Calif for SV.

2. Redneck 101: Refers to a well-known redneck who lives high in the hills above Talmage and Hwy 101. I believe this is mostly Syrah, if not 100% Syrah. I recall it as being a pretty big/rustic red in its youth.
