Better than average Burgs

by Richard Fadeley OLD » Wed Dec 17, 2014 12:19 am

I've recently been treated to several very nice Burgundies, red and white:
'13 Dom. Chene, Macon Milly-Lamartine. Just about as nice a wine that I've tasted from the Macon. Full, round, complete.
'11 Olivier Bourgogne "Les Setilles" , a deft touch of oak makes a perfect white Burg.
'02 JP Magnien Morey St.-Denis 1st Cru, "Les Faconnieres" bought on my last trip to Burgundy and opened for my daughter's birthday. All you could ask for. You will probably never see this wine, but the next wine might still be floating around.
'07 Rémi Jeanniard Morey St. Denis 1er Cru "Clos des Ormes", equally impressive, with everything that you would expect in a 1st Cru. Turns out that both of these Morey's are almost next to each other.
'11 Evening Land Cotes-du-Nuit Villages, what a surprise. After a double decant a about 30 minutes of air this was mind-blowing. From a "Last Bottle" deal @ $17 this is one of those "you'll never see again deals, just relax and enjoy". Should have bought at least a case.
While the Louis Bouillot Blanc de Noirs, Crement de Bourgogne was our top sparkler in our Champagne/Sparkling wine tasting, followed closely by Domaine Carneros and Champagne Montaudon.
This is an interesting producer, from Oregon, owns land in Burgundy, make wine there, but still lives in Oregon. A dedicated Burgundian transplant (wouldn't we all like to be?).
It's been a better than average several weeks for me, with some nice Bordeaux sprinkled in there as well (i.e. '05 Lynch-Moussas).

Who is the Burgundian transplant--not clear to me from your sentence--Louis Bouillot?

I might could have expressed that a little better. The wine maker/entrepreneur, don't know his name, is from the US. He is making wine in Oregon and Calfornia, but his heart seems to be in Burgundy (why not). I think that he brings most (if not all) of his production in Burgundy back to the US (many thanks) and he seems to have purchased a property near Meursault. The Cotes-de-Nuits Villages that I referred to does not seem to be a current offering. I understand that he is from Oregon, but has spent time in Burgundy. Unusual business model. The wine that I was reporting on (C-d-N-V) seems to be is a nice place right now. But we will probably never see it again, and certainly not at that price.

Interesting notes. I have had that Evening Land a couple of times blind and really found it lacking both times. Same goes for the Evening Land Oregon wines. Just not a winery that works for me.

I;ve found Evening Land to acceptable but not exciting. Lafon has some involvement, but not hands on. I think the main owner is a record producer or something, but doubt he makes the wines.
