St. Urbans-Hof.....OK, I am following TomHills lead!

by Bob Parsons Alberta » Sat Dec 13, 2014 10:46 pm

A few days ago Tom graciously posted a note on the 2013 Nik Weis St Urbans-Hof Wiltinger Riesling Alte Reben, Mosel.

viewtopic.php?f=3&t=52673

That same day I had just purchased some 2012 Kabinett Feinherb, same vineyard designation so here are my thoughts on my wine!

$29 Cdn, good natural cork, tall slim bottle, new style of label for this weingut. 10% alc, AP No 3 529 290 14 13.

Medium straw color. Mineral, citrus nose with white floral blossoms. No gout de petrol! Pear and hint of honeysuckle as it aired.
Drinks well now so am anxious to see how this will develope in time. Nice balance, not too sweet, does not appear as acidic as Toms note on the `13. Nice minerality, "chalk" from across the table. Good mid palate, lengthy finish, apple, does not appear to have too much tropical fruit tone at this stage. I am happy to stash some away!

Sounds like the sort of food friendly real Kabinett which I love, Bob, not declassified Spätlese or Auslese.

I visited the estate a few years ago (2004?) and was impressed by Nik Weis' approach to wine-making. At the time mostly 2003s were on offer and he did a good job in making elegant wines out of that torrid vintage though nearly everything tasted as if it belong to a prädikat at least one notch higher than announced on the label. I bought a few which have long since disappeared down the hatch.

Bob, I find it strange that a 2013 vintage German wine would be submitted for approval (last digits indicate year of submission) the same year. Usually the vintage is a year (or more) preceding the APR #. Could someone clarify this for me?

He's talking about a 2012 wine. The 2013 wine was the Tom Hill one from an earlier post.

Bob's bottle is the 2012 Kabinett Feinherb.

St. Urbans-Hof does hew to a more classical style, but I can assure you that this wine is in fact Spätlese in terms of oechsle levels. Everything is. There has not been Kabinett at Kabinett ripeness levels since about 1995 or 1996. In fact, the required levels for Kabinett are so low (set that way to satisfy the crap producers of flatland Piesporter Michelsberg and Zeller Schwarz Katz) that you likely would not want to drink things that were anywhere near the low end of the Kabinett spectrum. Even the higher end of the range tends to provide rather thin wines.

Sorry about the slight confusion, I was wondering at the time if I was making sense the way I set the thread up  .

As well as buying a bottle of Hexamer Sauv Blanc (gasp), I have topped up on the 2013 Nik Weis Wiltinger Alte Reben Feinherb. Not sure how long I should cellar but wonder if this one is built for the long haul? Pretty sure I could buy more but is on the shelf right next to the 2013 Schloss Lieser Riesling Kab so big temptation right there.

I would not recommend cellaring the Feinherb Alte Reben for the "long haul." Certainly it will have a good life of 7-10 years if you choose to cellar it, but it's not meant as an ager.
