Weekend Wine Notes!

by Brian K Miller » Mon Dec 08, 2014 3:33 pm

2012 Preston Family "We Won''t Do That Again"* White Grenache.

Much more interesting than the first time I sample this! Definitely some "White Rhone" waxyness, with fine apple??? flavoring and a fennel????? note (I was trying to think about what that flavor was!). Pretty delicious in combination with the grilled Ahi tuna steaks with pepper crust!

2009 Bouchaine "Carneros" Pinot Noir. Black cherry fruit (versus the more typical red cherry from many Carneros pinots!) with some nice earthyness. Silky tannins. Still some acid and enough fruit I can see this improving for another five years?

2011 Smith-Madrone Spring Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon. What a beautiful wine! Pure cherry and cassis fruit-definitely a touch of green, but still some very fine richness. Not thin or weak at all. Captivating Napa County Cabernet!

* They ordered Grenache Noir from the nursery....that was not what they planted!

This post caught my eye as I used to post a thread about "what one was drinking at the weekend".
I stopped doing it but think this is a good idea as it enables folks here to post a few thoughts on a wine they opened and liked...or disliked!!

WTN: 2011 Andreas Bendner Kulina Zenit, Mosel.

Opened late on Sunday evening. Entry level from a young chap who seems to buy in from various spots in the Mosel. Quite an advanced color, not much on the nose. After an hour started to show some character for a riesling but I was not too impressed. Have a half left for tonight so we will see eh. Way overpriced at $26 Cdn.

Wow. $26 Canadian for a 2011!

The 1986 Schloss Schonborn Auslese I had the other day was only $30 for a bottle!

I have a great German selection in my cellar, purchased this on a whim. Have some 91/96 Mosel from Ehlen which were around $25!!
Did not know you are a Schonborn fan Brian :D .

I love it, but then mine is an uneducated palate when it comes to Riesling, so...
My understanding is the granddaughter has moved into the business in a deeper role, found all this older wine cellared below the family house, and has been making it quite widely available!
