WTN: 2011 Lilian Ladouys

2011 Lilian Ladouys Ste. Estephe
My first bottle ever from this supposedly old property that's been rehabbed and renamed after the winemaker's wife. That's all I know, and those details might not be accurate. Immediate nose of chicken poop and blackberry; quite decent and full on the palate with good fruit and a bit of herb for first hour or so but shut down hard by the third. No idea what to make of it. Interesting critical history: Jancis only gives it 83 pts but The Speck put it in their Top 100.

Jenise,
I have 2 bottles of the '09 which I have tasted, and it was well above average. I bought 3 bottles of the '11 from WTSO or maybe Last Bottle, and I have no doubt that it will develop into a very nice wine as well. I haven't opened any that I have but I did have the '09 in wine class and it was 90+, though maybe a bit modern. Could be a little shut down at the moment. Most Bdx seems to come around, its just a matter of when. Cellar Tracker is all over the '09, which I would agree with. Maybe give the '11 1-3 more years before opening another. I know I will after your post.
Thanks,

not sure about the renamed part- know I've had Lilian Ladouys at least back to 1990. Generally a rather marginal property, but can be a decent value in warm vintages I generally hate 2003 Bordeaux, but the 03 LL was good for the $16 pricetag.

Richard, I also have a bottle each of the 09 and the 10, neither of which I've tasted, but picked up after a Bordeaux-besotted friend mentioned having one in a restaurant and quite liking it. The property had not otherwise come to my attention before.

Dale, $16? Nice price. The 09 and 10 both cost around $35.

So after all these years I opened another 2011 Lilian last night. Effusive nose reminds of Cos, I kid you not, in all the best ways with generous black cherry, tobacco and that mild poopy thing. By aroma, no sign of an off-year; that only dawns on you when you find the palate dryer than expected--over two hours, it didn't change. Gets better with protein (I served lamb chops).
