WTN: NV Felsina Spumante Brut

Yes, you heard right. Felsina, THAT Felsina. Saw this at Pike & Western wine shop in Seattle two days ago and drug the one bottle discovered on display among the bubblies over to the cash register. Is this the only one you have, I asked. Yes, only one left, said the clerk, excited that someone would ask. This guy has worked at this store for 20 years or more and said he had never seen it before a direct-from-Italy winery rep left a few recently, "And I've visited the winery twice over the years. Thought I'd tasted everything they made, but never knew about this."

I bought it ($25) and shared with our fellow weekend travelers (and bigtime Italian wine lovers) that night in our hotel room. Wonderful: very light yellow color. Vitamin-mineral nose with round flavors of raw yellow corn and ranier cherry adding to the lemon and apple on the palate. Good concentration, very fine bubble and excellent persistence, long finish. If there had been more we'd have raced back to P&W next morning to fight over the remaining bottles. Oh, and what's in it? Not sure about the other 40% but 60% of it is sangiovese, though there's no hint of the pink or gray colors that often accompany red grape origins.

Neat stuff. If you see it: BUY!

I've never seen this, too.
The italian website says metodo classico, 60% sangiovese, 20% pinot noir, 20% chardonnay and 20/24 months on lees.

Roberto, thank you so much for filling in the other 40%. The chardonnay in particular makes sense. Hope you're able to find some--you won't be sorry.

That's a fascinating "discovery", Jenise. I'll search for it the next time (if) I go to Italy.
