My Thanksgiving wines in brief

by JC (NC) » Sat Nov 29, 2014 4:49 pm

We had our traditional communal Thanksgiving repast following a noon service at church. The Brotherhood of St. Andrew prepared three turkeys, both roasted and from a fryer. We also had ham. I brought a party version of mashed potatoes and the wines. We had as other dishes sweet potato casserole, mac and cheese, baked ziti, two types of stuffing, regular mashed potatoes and gravy, a raw vegetable plate with spicy dip, salad, a cranberry dish, a red rice, etc. and the most pies I've ever seen on one table, plus cake and cherry cobbler. I didn't see the green bean casserole this year but I think there was a broccoli casserole. I had planned to bring a spinach casserole but figured it wasn't needed.

I took a Spanish Cava, 2012 Alex Gambal Bourgogne Blanc/Chardonnay, 2013 Scherrer Dry Rose', 2009 Carter Vineyard Pinot Noir Hillblock Pommard, Willamette Valley, OR, and 2009 Montevina Terra d'Oro Zinfandel, Amador County, CA. We didn't open the Pinot Noir. The Alex Gambal Chardonnay was very nice with muted oak and a good pairing with white turkey meat. I brought home part of the bottle of Scherrer rose' and will post on that tomorrow. I took only a few sips of the Zinfandel but found it fruity and a big, bold wine. It could stand up to fryer turkey or the baked ziti. I thought the Cava was good QPR. It was a non-vintage Segura Viudas Cava Brut Reserva Heredad available at several Triangle-area Total Wine stores for $18.99. I may buy more.
I will open the Carter Pinot Noir after I finish the Scherrer rose'.

I need to try the Segura Viudas Cava Brut Reserva. I've had the basic Segura Viudas before and often use it for parties as it's a great QPR at $7-8/bottle.

Doug The basic Segura cava is one of the best values in sparkling wine out there. I am with you on needing to try the next one up.
