"I Love NY" Now "Taste NY"

by Victorwine » Sat Nov 15, 2014 10:09 am

Besides the environmental and technical (know how) factors, political, economics, social and cultural attitudes all play a role in the success of a wine industry in a given region. I think New York State is finally moving in the right direction with the Second Wine, Beer, Spirits and Cider Summit.

I have to chuckle when a Spaniard brings this to our attention(!), but otherwise, I would not have seen this until after the fact.
This is a good move. To too many people, 'New York State' is tied up with 'New York City', but the state is so much more than that, and hopefully this spurs growth in our agricultural sector which can hopefully bring people to see the beauty in Upstate New York, where I live. Little incremental businesses are happening, like more locally grown hops to support the local breweries, more distilleries cropping up using local ingredients, not to mention wineries, but that requires a larger investment.
Thanks for bringing this to our attention, Victor!

Hi Mark,
I like the idea that with government “assistance” the state’s alcoholic beverage industry could possible tap into (“or connect the dots”) with NYC tourism.

Tapping in to NYC tourism has been a goal for decades in the Finger Lakes wine industry, but until now there hasn't been a governmental commitment on the scale that it seems to be going. Yet, the funding to do it remains minuscule compared to the money that European wine industries throw at NYC, and although weakening, resistance in the city remains.

Shameless self promotion alert: You two might be interested in my latest book, Timeless Bounty. It traces the trajectory of Central NY agriculture, and it ends with words about the hops and spirit industries growing alongside wine. Central NY was once the hops center of the United States until Prohibition. The hops industry is a rebirth, not a new idea for the region.

The so-called locavore movement is benefiting the Finger Lakes region.

Thanks, Hoke. I haven't left--checked in a number of times. I'm lessening my time online--doctor says it's been good for my blood pressure...

Of course, this subject is close to me. This year I celebrated 30 years in the Finger Lakes region, and the region is STILL emerging!
