WTN: Margerum Syrah GreatOaksRanch '01..(short/boring)

by TomHill » Wed Nov 05, 2014 10:55 am

Tried this one last night:
1. Margerum Syrah GreatOaksRanchVnyd/SBC RTW (#1024 of 1150; www.MargerumWineCompany.com) 2001: Med.dark color w/ little bricking; some blackberry/Syrah/ripe slight licorice/pungent/peppery light smokey/oak slight Rhonish some complex nose; lightly tart/metallic/tangy slight earthy/leathery/Rhonish some blackberry/Syrah/spicy biit peppery/pungent light smokey/oak complex flavor w/ light tannic bite; med.long bit earthy/lathery/southernRhone some peppery/blackberry/Syrah bit metallic/tangy light smokey/oak finish w/ light bitey tannins; starting to show some age but holding well; reminds me a lot of a mature Fonsalette Syrah; maybe a slight hint of brett in there.

1. I have, of course, followed DougMargerum's wines from the very start. Back when he was running the WineCask and doing the SantaBarbaraFutures tastings there. His wines don't get a lot of notice, but I find them to be very well made, maybe not profound, and quite reasonably priced.

great notes, as usual, Tom..I first encountered Doug's wines while he was still at Wine Cask..My introduction was a Sauvignon Blanc, I think it was from Westerly Vyds, that I tasted at the Wine Cask bar..They only had a few bottles left in the store, probably 3 or 4, and I said, "done deal", and bought em.. Wish I had been able to buy more.

Yup...Doug's SauvBlanc has consistently been a lovely wine. He alsp makes a PinotGris from WashState that's very nice. Nothing profound...just good drinking.
