WTN: Forlorn-Hope Ukiyo Rose '13...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Mon Nov 03, 2014 12:40 pm

Tried this last night w/ a weird salad:
1. Forlorn-Hope SierraFoothills Rose Wine DeWittVnyd/AmadorCnty (11.31%; TourigaNacional/TintaRoriz/
TintaCao/TintaAmarella; early picked; 297 cs) 2013
: Pale salmon/copper color w/ slight burnished bronze tint; some phenolic watermelon/cranberry rather savory/spicy earthy/austere very unusual nose; quite tart/tangy slight phenolic bit watermelon/cranberry/spicy very slight oxidative bit earthy/tannic somewhat austere flavor; very long quite tart/tangy bit spicy/cinammon slight phenolic/resiny tiny bit of oxidative rather austere unuusual finish; a wine I have difficulty wrapping my mind around; went terrific w/ my weird salad. $24.00

1. MattRorick is at it again. This rose (and it does look like a rose wine, rather than an "orange" wine) was made from his KumoToAme rose that he left in barrel another 8 months w/ no SO2 additions nor topping, hence a slight oxidative streak.
I kept going back for another glass (good wine seems to do that to you) and scratching my head pondering "what the heck is this. Is Matt messing w/ my mind". It reminded me a bit like a dry PX from Montilla, a bit like a very austere Provencal rose w/ lots of garrigue & little fruit. Thiis is not a rose for everyone. It will not play well in Monktown. You have to think outside the box and have it w/ food. Not your normal tooty-frooty rose. A thinking man's rose. But it hit the spot w/ my weird salad (arugula, minced avocado, herbed bacon, sauteed CarrVlly bread cheese, crema, Vinagre de Jerez).

Thanks Tom.

I had to pass on the last offer, but my order from thesummer (Picpoul, Pinot Gris and Valdiguie) arrived a couple of weeks ago, and the first one open (the Valdiguie - see separate note) has me very interested.

Does he do different wines every time, or are there recurring wines? I never seem to see notes on 2 vintages of the same wine anywhere.

Yup....saw your TN on the Valdigue and was distressed/suicidial that you'd beat me to a TN on that wine!! Not tried my
Valdigue yet.
He does repeat many of his wines from yr to yr. Like the QueSaudade Verdelho and the Ost-Intrigen StLaurent.
Now that he has the vnyd/wnry (Stevenot) up in CalaverasCnty, he'll probably be drawing more SierraFoothils grapes. I'm looking forward to trying his own-rooted Chard from Stevenot...will it be conventional or something weird?? That's probably being played out as we speak.
As you know, he makes his wines at Tennbrink where AbeSchoener makes his. They both have a lot of the same mind-bent. Think Matt's are not as weird as Abe's though.

Well the Valdigué would not have put me in the mind of Scholium. (thankfully)

I keep wishing Tenbrinks would open a tasting room for all the unique and rare creatures being assembled in that little red barn.

Not nearly enough traffic, of course.
