2005 Dunham Cellars Artist Series* 'Frenchtown' Syrah
Dunham makes, or at least made in 2005, two syrahs, one from the famed Lewis Vineyard and one from a vineyard called Frenchtown. When I tasted them side by side at the winery, the difference was striking: where Lewis was powerful and full of sweet black fruit, the Frenchtown had violets all over the nose, bacon on the palate and the brighter tone of a European wine. "North America," I said pointing at one, "and Northern Rhone" I said pointing at the other, "and I'm in love with the Northern Rhone. I didn't know this was possible in WA state." To reward me for being the "one in five hundred people who come through this tasting room that could make that distinction", he offered me a 30% discount. A consequential offer, considering the two wines I liked best (the other, his artist label merlot) were $75 per bottle, and classic generous Dunham. I bought a six pack of each.
We who love visiting tasting rooms have a tendency to rate tasting room experiences. For me? That visit to Dunham was best in Washington and among my favorites ever.
Served last night after an hour decant, with a meat loaf dinner while watching Game Six, the Frenchtown continues to earn my esteem. Big floral nose, now with a little leather and roasted meats among the violets, and on palate generous fruit with bacon and herbs. Long finish. Would think this is entering its peak phase.
