Help with wine in RI and MA.

by Richard Fadeley OLD » Mon Oct 27, 2014 10:14 pm

We will be flying into Providence, RI in a few weeks and driving out to Cape Cod (lobster alert!!) for a long weekend. Normally on these New England trips it is a no-brainer to get our wines @ the New Hampshire state-owned stores. But this time we will be too far south. So, flying into Providence and driving out to Barnestable, MA, where is a good place to pickup a few good bottles of wine for our lobster fest and maybe a few oysters? TIA.

And you will be too far east for my usual recommendations. I will drop a note to a friend who lives on the Cape, but I can't be sure he'll reply in time.

Be sure to stop in Fall River on your way. They have many great shops on the main drag. My favorite is Tanza Southway Liquors, but the competitors are almost as good. The wine selection is terrific, and if you like Portuguese wine, there is no better location anywhere including Portugal!

Why the big Portuguese influence Carl? Any chance of seeing a winelist on-line that features these fine wines.

The population in the Fall River and New Bedford, MA is heavily Portuguese because of the past whaling industry. Yankees didn't want to work for Captain Ahab. Will try to find a list for you.

What about calling in at Westport Rivers winery - www.westportrivers.com - , not too far off your route. Their excellent sparkling wines would be a good match and they have dry still whites such as GV that would also match seafood.

Seems as though Tanza has been sold and under new management. A bit disorganized at the moment and only a small selection of French wines. We did pick up a La Chablissien '12 Petit Chablis, a white Bordeaux, a Talmard '12 Macon-Chardonnay and a few nice Bordeaux's (Peuisguine-St-Emilion) and a Graves-de-Veyres) both nice. A DuBois '10 Bourgogne from a small producer in Pommard (not sure of the producer, but the only example from Pommard) that was good ++, while a 2012 Bourgogne Cote Challanaise from the local coop in Buxy was either lacking or no where close to being ready to drink. They seem very disorganized at this store right now, I would look for another source in Providence if possible. Later we picked up the La Chablissien '11 Chablis and it was noticeably nicer than the '12 Petit Chablis.

Who said anything about French Wine; we said it was a great city to buy Portuguese Wines.
