It's almost November - Wine Focus suggestions please

by David M. Bueker » Mon Oct 27, 2014 11:54 am

Some holiday drinking happening in the USA late in the month. Then there are the elections in the USA, so plenty of celebration or drowning of sorrows depending on how candidates fare.

Anyway, plenty of reasons for a glass (or ten) of wine.

Is it too early to start thinking of Port, Sherry, Madeira, etc., and a crackling fire?

Didn't we do the fortifieds last December. I seem to recall we did, and that it somewhat crashed and burned.

It was indeed crash and burn! We have not been to either of the big "A" of late..Austria, Australia. Maybe we could narrow something down here?
Notice I did not mention Alsace  .

Kinda like Bob's thought processes. Another possibility is Sparklers!

I like Bob's thoughts, though I like Alsace! "Delicious or dismal - your take on Alsace"

Austria could be good. We've done a bunch of Syrah based wines lately, so I would be wary of Australia right now.

We've tried sparklers at the holidays several times with limited success. Perhaps it's just the holidays.

Mmm, Austria. We don't have the local selection that we used to, but one local shop that I don't get by very often has a good relationship with North Berkeley. Dooesn't NB have a decent line of Austrians?

No. They only do France and Italy.

Well, this shop does Austria anyway. They're not 100 percent NBI, just the best local spot for that importer.

I could probably open a couple bottles from Austria in November which is more than I opened from Provence and Languedoc, etc. in October.

Are we agreed on "The wines of Austria," for November then? Does Grüner Veltliner go with turkey? I think it might ...

No, but I write about it. 8)

I can also build you a pan-seared, oven-roasted thick eggplant filet with a wild mushroom demi that will fill a steak-sized hole in most people's tummies and souls without sacrificing either a cow or a soy.

Shouldn't you be cooking the food instead of building it?
