WTN: A Burg and Bordeauxs

by Jay Labrador » Sun Oct 19, 2014 4:13 am

From the President's Dinner of the International Wine and Food Society:

Marc Colin Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Les Caillerets 2010 - Buttery and creamy. Verging on New World. Good, though.

Chateau Cos d'Estournel 2002 - Minty, earthy, very dry, still firm on the finish. Dried tobacco leaf. Roast meat. Excellent with the duck but a little chunky.

Chateau Figeac 2001 - Soft, slightly elevated acidity. Dried black berries. Good length. Licorice. A touch of blueberry jam. Preferred over the Cos.

Chateau Doisy-Daene Barsac 2004 - From half bottle. Red/gold. Initially some mushroom notes that disappears after a bit. Some nuts and coffee as well as the usual candied pineapple and apricots.

From the Malolos Congress Dinner at Cafe Ysabel:

Chateau Gloria 2011 - Lovely wine. Fine balance of everything. Classic Bordeaux.

Chateau Fombrauge St. Emilion GCC 2011 - Ripe, rich, chocolatey style. Well done if you like it like that. Not for everyone. Not a style I favor but quite good in its way. Best to decant for an hour at least.

Fleurs de Ciron Sauternes 2009 - Light and somewhat watery. More like a Monbazillac, according to Arnie. Acceptable.

Chateau Rieussec 2003 - Good thing I brought this along. It's been a while since I've had this. It's shed some of its baby fat so it no longer seems excessively, almost cloyingly sweet. Much better balance and complexity at this point. Honey, candied fruit, marmalade and dried apricots. Candied orange slices. Tropical fruit. Excellent.

Sunday lunch:

L'Abeille de Fieuzal 2005 - Chateau de Fieuzal's second wine. Meaty, mushroomy nose. Fairly ripe fruit. Blackberry, cassis, A little woody. The tannins are still a bit firm but otherwise it seems to be at peak. Decent, if not very interesting.

Hi Bob,

Glad you enjoy the notes and the blog. Noel does most of his stuff on Facebook now. He has been very busy lately although I understand he has a little more time starting this month. Hopefully we'll hear more from him.

In general I prefer 2001 Bordeaux over 2002. The 2001s are drinking so well now, but seem ok for another 10+ years of pleasure. The 2002s seem like the latest coming of 1995. There's lots of stuff there, but it sure is tough.

Gloria has been a paragon on consistency for decades: reliable, well-made, affordable, true claret.

But I think since at least the 2009 vintage, Gloria has been on the rise and is seriously underpriced in the market place.

I suspect that affordability won't last, just like for so many other Bordeaux overachievers through the years!

Glad you enjoyed the '96 d'Angerville Clos des Ducs, Jay. Was wondering what you thought of it.

Best,

N
