WTN: Two Old Zins...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Wed Oct 15, 2014 12:14 pm

After two others went down the drain, these two were good:
1. Nalle Zin DryCreekVlly/SonomaCnty (13.5%; Team Zinfandel) DougNalle/Healdsburg 1989: Med.color w/ some bricking; some spicy/raspberry/DCV Zin some cedary/pencilly/smokey/pungent rather fragrant/complex quite attractive mature Zin nose; fairly tart bit lean/metallic/tangy/grapefruity some cedary/pencilly/oldZin bit raspberry/spicy/DCV Zin complex flavor w/ light/bit bitey tannins; very long tart/grapefruity bit metallic/tangy some raspberry/DCV Zin/spicy rather cedary/pencilly/pungent/oldZin complex finish w/ light/bitey tannins; still has some fruit left and offers up the pleasure of a fully mature Zin.
_______________
2. RosenblumCllrs Zin Reserve HendryVnyd/NapaVlly TW (Super select French Tarensaud 60 gal.barrells) 1988: Ned.color w/ considerable browning; very strong blackberry/Zin/spicy some dusty/OV some charred/toasty/pungent/Fr.oak deep complex nose; slight spritz(?) very tart/tangy/citrusy strong blackberry/Zin/spicy some toasty/pungent/Fr.oak flavor w/ light/bitey tannins; very long rather tart/tangy/citrusy strong Zin/blackberry/spicy rather charred/toasty/Fr.oak finish w/ light/tangy/bitey tannins; still plenty of fruit left but rather lean/tangy on the palate.

Are you in cleaning mode? Lots of old wines lately. Still going through the garage boxes?

Still in a cleaning mode. But not from the badly stored wines out in the garage. But I do need to get to work out there again.

This latest stash is from a walk-in closet in my bedroom. Uncontrolled but reasonable temps. Mostly wines w/ 2-3 btls of each.
When I get home at night, I'll crack one open. If it's bad, down the drain it goes. The other (presumably bad/undrinkable) btls
go into a box that, when full, I tape up and leave it out in the parking lot behind WholeFoods. No idea where those wines
disappear to.

If the wine is passable/reasonably good, it goes into a box I gift to my girlfriend. She either drinks them or passes them onto
some of her friends who's palates aren't quite as exhalted as her boyfriend's.

If the wine is really good or particularly interesting (like the EdmundsStJohn Syrah '87), I put it into a tasting of "ArchiveWines"
or ship it off to the winemaker if they no longer have it in their library.

It's kinda fun, David, to open up a box of wine & discover what lies therein. Just cracked a box of old white Rhones w/ lots
of old Viogniers and next will be a box of old Alsatians, mostly Z-H's. Stay tuned for more (short/boring) TN's.
