WTN: I Hate EdmundsStJohn Wines...(short/boring)

'cause they're so friggin good:
1. EdmundsStJohn Syrah Calif TW (www.EdmundsStJohn.com) 1987: Med.color w/ some bricking; some blackberry/Syrah/very spicy quite smokey/pungent/bit ozone/roasted/coffee/smoked meats slightly reductive slight floral/violets/perfumed very Rhonish very complex beautiful nose; slightly tart/tangy strong smokey/pungent/coffee/roasted/smoked meats/very Rhonish slight floral/violets/blackberry/Syrah very complex flavor w/ light/gentle/silky tannins; very long/lingering strong roasted/smokey/pungent/expresso/smoked meats bit mineral/reductive very light floral/violets/blackberry/Syrah quite Rhonish/complex finish w/ light/silky/smooth tannins; as perfect a Calif Syrah as you're gonna find w/ loads of Rhonish/smokey character; as good as some of the old Qupes I've had; an amazing Syrah.

1. Had a lot going on in the kitchen last night. I pulled this btl from a recent stash I was working on as a throwaway because I was sure it was dead & gone. Immediately from the color & knew it had hope. From the nose, I had to recheck the label that it was not an abandoned CoteRotie from my stash.
As I was cooking away...going out to the grill to turn the roasting peppers..reducing the braising liquid of Java Stout & Balsamic from the short ribs I'd braised overnight the night before..and stirring the steaming pot oof creamy polenta w/ crema; I'd keep going back to pour anuther glass. "Danged, this stuff is good". Finally, after about an hour, I assembled my plate and was ready to sit down to eat. So I got up to pour one more glass. "Say whot??". There was only a half cup of sediment-loaded Syrah in the btl (hadn't bothered to decant). Egads...I'd drunk the whole friggin' btl. "Dang was that stuff good".

2. The Berkeley address indicates this was made at his first location, before he moved up to the Emeryville location, where I first met Steve on a visit, out behind the Oaks Card Shop. I would guess this is from Durrell fruit, but not certain.

Steve confirms it was mostly Durrell Syrah w/ about 8%-9% McDowellVlly Syrah & Duriff fruit.

Very interesting. I'm almost out of Durrell Syrah. Just one or two bottles left. :(

I'm with you, Tom--hate the stuff.

A friend opened the 2001 Wylie-Fenaughty for us recently. In a word, it was stunning. Based on the aroma (I started drinking it "blind") I would have sworn I had a mature Cote Rotie in my hands. On top of that, the wine had great structure and mouthfeel. I love Steve's syrahs young, but with some age they can become something really special.
