WTN: 2001 Christoffel Würzgarten Auslese

by David M. Bueker » Sun Oct 12, 2014 2:25 pm

2001 Joh. Jos. Christoffel Erben Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Auslese - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer (10/11/2014)
This is still not fully mature, but it is starting to open up more. The fresh tree fruit is giving way to more of the classic Würzgarten spice, and there is more breadth to the palate impression than there has been. It remains a very focused wine, and also an elegant expression of Auslese. It's a pleasure to drink with a slightly spicy Asian stir-fry, and also a joy on its own. There is plenty of material here for years and perhaps a decade plus of profitable aging. I'll be in no hurry with the rest of my bottles.

Thanks for note.
Any chance you've had the 01 UW Spat recently? Have a lone bottle I'm pondering

I had it in September. My notes are here. It took some time to open up as well, but everyone loved it.

As another data point, my most recent bottle was in February and it was great as always (started drinking them in 2011). If I had one bottle I'd drink it sometime in the next five years, and would not hesitate to drink it now if the spirit moves you.

It's worth noting that we had the last 1/3 of the bottle last night, and it was miles and miles more open, expressive and complex than it was on the first night. Wow was it ever fantastic.
