WTN: 2011 Monchhof Robert Eymael Urziger Wurzgarten Kabinett

A.P. 2602 029 002 12. Rudi Wiest import. Stelvin cap. 8.5% alcohol by volume. I bought a bottle of this at Picasso Restaurant in Bellagio, Las Vegas to take back to my hotel room at the Tropicana. I complimented the sommelier on the extensive list of German wines. I was also tempted by an Erbacher Marcobrunn but it was about $20 more than the Mosel wine I selected. Frizzante, deeper straw color, delicate peachy nose. Peach, spice, ginger on the palate; mildy acidic. Appealing to me but not irresistible.

Admittedly, I like Monchhof a bit more than David does, but this one sounds rather boring. 2011 has not lived up to my initial expectations, either, in the Mosel - kind of a mixed bag for me.

If the Marcobrunn was a recent wine from Schönborn (probably the most common producer from this site), then I would have definitely gone with that. Since at least 2009, Schönborn appears to have taken a major step forward. (From the 1990s through 2007, inconsistency was the name of their game.)

I am willing to bet that in 10-12 years time that many 2011s will be very enjoyable drinking. 1997 was a pleasant but underwhelming middle Mosel vintage when it was first released, but lately the wines have been very fine.

I'll agree with you for the most part here. Maybe it's just that my initial expectations for 2011 were actually higher than they were 2012, yet the latter has been the vintage that I've bought a lot more from.
