1992 Clos Du Val. Bad. Vinegar. Soured. Totally undrinkable. What a mistake. I'll be even more pissed if the retailer doesn't give me my money back tomorrow. Lesson #1: Don't buy unrefigerated old wine. of course, I kinda new that, and I took a big risk. Big disappointment, as I was looking forward to trying this one. I really like Clos Du Val wines I've tasted at the winery. Zero Stars
2000 Showket Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon (Oakville/Silverado Trail). Not my usual style. Bright red cherry fruit=definitely not the dark, savory fruit I prefer. But, you know, this is a very nice wine. Heidi Barret knows her stuff, within her style. This was enjoyed by my fellow diners. Quite nice. QPR? Not that great, but it was a nice wine for the dinner (mostly red meat-lamb and filet, and a gorgonzola stuffed chicken). ***1/2
? Vintage (2002?) Geyser Peak Winery Cabernet Sauvignon. Off the wine list at the restaurant (not that great a list). I like Alexander Valley Cabs in general. This was a pleasant, dark fruit, smooth, very drinkable "commercial" cab. Exciting? Not really. Unique? No. But still a nice quaffer that provided an interesting contrast with the Showket. *** Good QPR
After repairing back to my townhouse three blocks away, I opened a 2004 Storybook Mayacama Zinfandel. My one friend is a "Zin-Head" and this wine went over very well. A little sweet, but still quite balanced. I prefer the Chateau Potelle and the Saddleback Zins I've tried this year, but I will definitely buy this one again. At $25, a nice QPR. Main negative comment: this one needs to be laid down a couple of years. It's a little young. ***
