WTN: Merlot & Gewurztraminer

by Jim Grow » Wed Aug 20, 2014 8:14 pm

2011 Selby Sonoma Co. Merlot, a very nice and fully ready Merlot from Sonoma Co. with sweet cherry fruit but adding complexity is the soy sauce and raw meat elements. I have one more bottle and will buy more. Consumed with steak and a very nice match indeed.

NV Bel Lago Gewurztraminer from Leelenau Co. Michigan, this wine was a revealation. At 14.5% abv it was semi- full bodied, not very viscous but very well balanced. With 1.45% R.S. (per the winery and a blend of 2010 & 2011) the acidity was excellent and the flavors had that chalky/mineral note not usually found in non-Alsatian wines. Consumed with spicy kung pao beef and another match made in heaven.

I've enjoyed some good wines from Susie Selby in the past but don't see them in the local market.
