WTN: EdmundsStJohn Zin NapaVlly '87..(short/boring)

by TomHill » Tue Aug 12, 2014 10:41 am

Tried this last night from my stash:
1. EdmundsStJohn Zin NapaVlly (TW) Berkeley 1987: Med.dark color w/ little bricking; quite spicy blackberry/Zin/peppery some dusty/OV/earthy bit rustic/old-timey slight alcoholic beautiful/complex oldZin nose; soft rather earthy/dusty/OV some blacknerry/Zin very spicy/peppery bit alcoholic some rustic/earthy/old-timey bit smokey/pungent/peppery complex flavor w/ light/drying/astringent tannins; very long slight alcoholic some blackberry/Zin/earthy/mushroomy rustic/old-timey some earthy/dusty/OV light cedary/pencilly/oak finish w/ light drying/astringent tannins; lots of dusty/rustic/old-timey character but still very much alive w/ some blackberry/Zin fruit; reminds mme a bit of some of the Ridge HowellMtn Zins of the early '70's at 15-20 yrs of age. $12.90 (PMW)

1. This was, I believe, from Steve's 2'nd vintage. Made in Berkeley afore he moved down to Emeryville. Not sure where the grapes for this came from. Maybe his first from ChesterBrandlin's vnyd??
I was expecting this wine to be pretty shot. As soon as I poured the first glass, I could tell from the color it was still alive. It's starting to dry out a bit on the palate, but still a very-much alive wine in a rustic/old-timey way.

Nice! Wish I had discovered Steve's wines earlier in my journey.

Well, David...I did...uhhhh...follow him from the very start.
Steve hasn't had this wine in 25 yrs. He's all out. I'm sending my last btl out to him when things cool off.
