WTN: Foillard, Matthiasson

by David M. Bueker » Sat Aug 02, 2014 2:29 pm

Had the 2013 Matthiasson Rosé last night. It starts out crisp and berry infused, and on the back end picks up a touch of creamy richness that is really intriguing. I do not normally say I wish I had bought more of a rosé, but will here.

Also had a glass of 2009 Foillard Morgon. It's not much different than it was at its release. Slow developing, with plenty of richness and baby fat left. No worries about further cellaring.

Interesting report, thanks. Do you expect a shutdown in the Foillard's future? 2009 Beaujolais seemed a bit plump for my taste on release and thinking about when to revisit. And the Matthiasson is absolutely killer this year.

David,
Got a chance to try this recently and was captivated. Oddly, my wife was not.
Makes me wonder about her . . .

If I remember correctly, the 09 Foillard CdP went through various cranky stages for the first few years (which is when I finished all my bottles), but I would find it hard to imagine that it is going to become more 'shut down' (in the sense of structure dominating the fruit) in the future. Assuming David's bottle is representative, perhaps it will mellow out for a long time and deciding when to open will be a question of personal taste?

Dale,

Matthiasson has to be on the list. Of course there are already way too many producers on the try soon list. I feel bad that a lot of small producers I really like end up falling off my radar after a few bottles, purely because other producers crop up. Trying to keep Matthiasson high on the radar though.

As for the Foillard, the wine will always have the last word.

Uhhh, Jim.....that lady is a keeper. Cut her some slack here!!!
I, too, was quite impressed w/ this Rose as well. Not a profound wine, but one you kept wanting you to
return for another glass. It blew away the BradPitt/AngelinaJolie rose we had last night..about as dull & insipid a
rose as I can recall.

I agree about the lady, I disagree about the wine. I enjoyed the pink from Pitt, etc.
