WTN: 2005 St. Innocent Freedom Hill Pinot Blanc

by Jenise » Tue Dec 12, 2006 8:50 pm

Not that I've had all that many domestic pinot blancs, but here, finally, is one I'll buy again. It's completely dry, but the fruit is so big it takes some time to realize that. And that has everything to do with the south facing Freedom Hill vineyard these grapes come from--the pinot noirs and chardonnays it gives forth are also on the steroidal side. Soft golden yellow color. The flavor is equal parts Asian pear-apple and white nectarine, and there's something a little more tropical thrown in too--star fruit, maybe. A good dose of minerality gives it substance and masculinity. It's a big, lovely wine.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

Thanks for the note. Maybe I'll try to obtain a bottle. I've liked Ponzi Pinot Blanc but haven't had many others.

Jenise, I am going to ignore your "cheese breath" reply, simply because I want to ask you if you had ever tried any wines from Stone Wolf winery? Well, have you? :-)

Jason: hey, buddy, you were there first!

Bob H: No, I haven't heard of Stone Wolf except through your reccomendations. Will it give me Cheese Breath?

Stone Wolf is a Willamette Valley winery. Linda Lindsey and her husband farm a fairly large place, and make the wines themselves. She is the winemaker, and her PG is the best I have had from the USA, but I admit to a bit of prejudice. Her pinot is among the best, and if you EVER get a chance to try her Matriarch series pinot, do NOT FAIL. she makes less than 100 bottles of it in exceptional years, and it is NOT to be missed. She does show up here once in a while, but it has been a while. Seek it out...especially the pg.

Unfortunately, Jenise, the answer is that Stone wolf does not make a pinot blanc.

Mostly related: I just opened and drank a good bit of a bottle of the 2004 version of this wine. Green apple, white peach and floral character. Nice stuff. It's light and quaffable. It is a bit alcoholic, but otehr than that...
