WTN: Squirrels & Flowers

by Jim Grow » Mon Jun 16, 2014 8:51 pm

I thawed out a couple of gray squirrels today and my wife fried them up to join a 2011 Flowers Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir. The match was great as squirrel is very mild and would not overpower the delicate flavors of the pinot noir. This wine was defined by cranberry fruit with a slight smokeyness on the palate and mostly resolved tannins. Just 13.2% abv (no problem) but I again was sooo hopeful that there was more non-fruit complexity. Hey even Brett would be a plus now. I really do not think that more time will bring greater complexity to this wine.

2011 and you are looking for additional complexity? Might I suggest a patience cuvee?

Jim, are you sure it's not in a dormant phase? It honestly sounds like one, and at 3-4 years that would be prime time for it to be napping. If you have more, wait until they turn five, then re-approach.
