PUR Régnié sur Granite 2012 - 11,5% abv
Production Unique Rebelle's style is quite difficult to pin down. Sometimes their wines are massive and super-ripe. Sometimes they are lovely, perfumed and elegant. I've even heard rumours of dirty bottles! I guess it might be due to the warts and all style of extreme naturalism they espouse?
Gladly here, despite the low sulphur (total was 13 mlg/l in this wine), there were no problems. Instead it was the most beautiful Régnié I have had apart from Julien Sunier's. It has the most vibrant and pure Gamay juiciness with a lovely hint of something woodsy (not woody).
The palate reaches a kind of Platonic ideal of Beaujolais: fruity and light and "easy" yet savoury, acidic, thirst quenching and fun. It transcends fun while remaining fun. I think that merits this being called a great wine, though I don't think many will agree with me on this point. But anyway, if Gamay fans come across this and you can verify that it's been transported and kept cool throughout its life, then you should try it.
