Any thoughts on Haut Brisson?

by Jenise » Sun Apr 20, 2014 1:35 pm

Have never had this St. Emillion. I'll admit, I bought a few bottles from Last Bottle last night--$36 delivered. For that price it sounded like a decent modern style Bordeaux, albeit something I generally hold no esteem for, but which might be a good crossover wine that would appeal to the typical new world wine lover who'd run screaming out of the room if you dished up something radically traditional like a Lynch Moussas, and I'll have a need for some such wines later this summer. Saw they also make a 'la Reserve'. Am I wrong in assuming the existence of the two wines with that one so-named speaks to their intention of appealing to the naive American buyer?

There website helps explain it:

Seems a little different from the traditional Bordeaux chateau. I would lean towards the basic Haut Brisson.
In my experience, when they try to over-do a wine, that is exactly what they do, over-do the wine and invariably the basic bottling is more agreeable.
Let us know what you experience is with this one.

I've only had a couple- a very tired '90, and a rather modern '05, but I'm unsure if regular or "La Reserve." What vintage did you get? I see the 2010 is $35 at Zachys.

It's the 2009, Dale. Should be reasonably safe and open for current drinking. Thanks for the data point on price--I checked Winesearcher the other night on the 09 and I don't think there was any entry under $55ish.

Richard, I hear you regarding the regular, and that's what I bought. Definitely leery of words like 'Reserve' coming out of Bordeaux--from the Rhone, I'm used to the word 'Reservee' and that doesn't set off any alarms, but with the single 'e' coming out of Bordeaux, that just seems wrong!
