Interesting Cool-Climate Syrah Blog

by TomHill » Fri Apr 11, 2014 11:11 am

At the RhoneRangers tasting on Sunday, I was tasting at BobLindquist's table when SteveLaw/MacLaren came up & introduced himself to Bob, along w/ a friend. I had met Steve earlier in the Garagiste Seminar where he poured his BennetVlly/JudgeFamilyVnyd Syrah '10, which was, I thought, the best of the lot. Over the last several months, we'd had several e-mail exchanges over that wine, which I thought was pretty special. Good winemaker/good wines. We all visited amongst ourselves for 5 mins or so and, after I tasted Bob's terrific X-Block Syrah '10, I wandered off.
As I was exiting the CranewayPavillion, this friend of Steve's who had joined in our chat waylayed me and started quizzing me on cold-climate Syrahs in Calif. I shared with him pretty much all I knew & he seemed rather interested in what I had to offer up. As we parted company after 10 mins or so, he handed me his card.
The guy was obviously pretty passionate about Calif Syrah. His name is Cyrus Limon and his cold-climate blog is:

I took a look at it today. It is a very interesting/informative blog on that subject. He has up his notes on the RhoneRanger'14 GrandTasting already. I'm pretty much in agreement on his take of most of the wines at the event. Though there were a lot of outstanding Syrahs poured there (my report is on the way), I'm in agreement with Cyrus' take on BobLindquist's wines being the star of the show.
Further down in his blog, he extolls the virtues of RandallGrahm's BienNacido/X-Block Syrah '09. We, in fact, tasted that wine on Wed. I was blown away by it. It is an outstanding wines, the likes of which I've not seen from Randall in many yrs. They reminded me of the Syrahs he used to make back in the '80's. I am oft disappointed when I taste Randall's wines, knowing that he does know how to make great wines. That X-Block and his Jesperson/EdnaVlly Syrah '10 are truly such great wines. It's nice to know that Randall can still make great wines when he chooses to...given great grapes.
Anyway, Cyrus is a very interesting & passionate guy and his blog is worth taking a look-see. Just what we all need...another wine blog to peruse!!! :-)

Dammit Tom! Now I am going to sign up for the Qupe club. I need to drop two if I am going to add one. Problem is I now buy mostly cool climate Syrah!

What to do. What to do...

Maybe the math is obvious to others but it's not to me. Have to drop two to add one?

Trying (and routinely and miserably failing) to limit purchases. If I add a mailing list I need to drop two.

Okay, so it's a self-imposed conservatism. That I understand. Yesterday came home from Los Angeles, for the first time ever, WITHOUT the wine box I took down with me. Zero new bottles. I always intend to do it that way, but the box always comes back full with new stuff.
