The growth of the wine industry in NY State

by Howie Hart » Mon Mar 31, 2014 4:50 pm

There were 14 New York wineries in just 9 counties in 1976. By 2013, there were 416 wineries or associated satellite branches in 53 of the state's 62 counties.

At 2013 East End Harvest (Long Island), Governor Cuomo gave a nice speech saying how the NY wine industry is “taking off like a rocket” and he premiered a new TV ad promoting the State’s fine wines.

Along with the amazing growth has been the loss of some historic cellars. I remember one in particular on the west side of Keuka Lake, just outside Hammondsport. The entrance was a large oval built into the hill, probably hand cut, right up against the road. You walked into an enormous cellar. This might have been Gold Seal back before all the mergers and name changes. Now it's closed up.

I rarely see anything about the newer FL and Niagara wineries failing or being sold, which seems surprising in light of the low survival rate of most new businesses. The price of getting into the game has got to be very high too (anyone know about what it is?), but demand seems to be such that once you're in the chances of surviving if not flourishing are pretty good.
