WTN: Two Yvon Métras Fleuries

by Saina » Fri Mar 21, 2014 3:57 pm

Yvon Métras was a highlight during last year's Beaujolais trip. He was quite a character: a grumpy man, driving an environmental catastrophe of a truck, with chickens roaming freely in the cellar and a leg of food poisoning hanging from the cellar ceiling - yet with wines of exquisite purity. When the chance arose to buy a few bottles to try at home, I bought few to sample and then decide what I want in quantity. And the two of them I've so far tried have furthered increased my admiration for Métras' wines. But the problem is I want both in quantity. And I've still got two to try. This sounds expensive. :(

Métras Fleurie 2010
Very pretty, bright red aromas, slightly peppery but still not going into a Syrah-like style of Bojo as some do. This is more in the aromatic, Pinot style with some sharp berry aroma (lingonberry perhaps?) and a slight stemminess bringing a welcome edge to the purity of fruit. Surprisingly smooth and soft for a 2010 - I really was expecting more edginess from this year - but with perfectly enough acidity to keep this very lively and moreish. My first impression was of a delicate and light wine, but there's steel there, too. Very primary, and thanks to that steel, I suspect this has a long life ahead despite the deceptive delicateness.

Métras Fleurie 2011
With almost all wines that I've been able to make the comparison I have preferred the 2010 to the 2011. But I think with this Métras, I do actually slightly prefer the 2011 - though they are so different in character that perhaps a comparison shouldn't be made.

This has darker fruit, seems much more robust and the scent has a startling resemblance to Foillard's CdP 2011. Racy, with plenty of both structure and primary fruit, unlike the shy 2010 this one wears its heart on its sleeve. Usually these are just the reasons why I prefer the more elegant 2010s in Beaujolais, but for some reason I find myself even more captivated by the 2011 with Métras. Strange. I can't explain why. But anyway, lovely wines both of them. Sadly Métras isn't exactly cheap for Beaujolais so I'll soon be financially ruined if I find more of these! :D
I don't drink wine because of religious reasons ... only for other reasons.

Sadly it's the most expensive Beaujolais out there, save for a few special cuvees.

Lovely wines though.
