WTN: Two Rieslings...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Thu Mar 20, 2014 2:55 pm

We tried these two last night after our Zins:
1. MesAmis DryRiesling KickOnRanch/SBC (14.8%) WhitcraftWines 2012: Pale yellow color; pleasant pineapple/R/floral slight perfumed talc/spicy/mineral bit simple nose; soft fairly dry ripe/pineapply/R/floral/perfumed talc lush flavor; med. soft/lush ripe/pineapple/floral/R slight perfumed talc/mineral finish; a pleasant little R but a bit on the simple side; would like a bit more acidity. $19.00

2. Seppelt RhineRiesling LateHrvst/ReserveBin SEAus (SaH: 22.5 Brix; RS: 3.5 Brix; 10.0%) 1982: Med.dark gold/some brown bit cloudy/murky color; bit oxidized/nutty rather pencilly/cedary/smokey old German Spatlese/honeyed/earthy rather complex nose; soft off-dry some honeyed/old Spat/R somewhat cedary/pencilly light earthy interesting/complex flavor; long cedary/smokey/pencilly some oxidized/nutty rather old German Spat/R/honeyed finish w/ a bitter/oxidized/wet dog fur/nutty character far in the backtaste; showing some oxidization/maderization but enough interesting stuff therein to make for a pleasant wine.

And a wee BloodyPulpit:
1. MesAmis: This is a label/wine of MattBrady, asst winemaker at Jaffurs, that Larry brought back for us to try. It was an altogether pleasant Riesling, but just that. Not the bracing acidity of the Ojai nor the weirdness of the Forlorn-Hope, both made from this same vnyd source.

2. Seppelt: This was from my discovered stash that had been stored, standing upright, under uncontrolled temperature conditions for 15-20 yrs. Not a profound old bones but in remarkably good condition, given the dreadful storage.
