Jean Foillard Morgon Cuvée 3,14 2009
It was Pi Day on 14.3. - because with the American way it comes out 3.14. Haha. I've long tried to look for a pun bad enough that I wouldn't enjoy it. I'm enjoying the search. But this still didn't make it. Might I be immune to bad jokes? To carry Pi a couple digits further, I opened the bottle at 3pm so now we have 3.14 15. Despite never understanding the rationale for giving points to wines I'll give it 92 points. 3.14 15 92...
Oh, the wine itself was pretty damn good, too. I'll be honest, 2009 is not a favourite year for me in the Beaujolais: too big, too bold, too ripe, even raisiny on occasion. Those aren't qualities I look for in Beaujolais or in any other wine for that matter. Foillard's 2009s have been pretty tasty, but I still have enjoyed the surrounding years more. But I didn't have any other Pi available (well, some quiche, which technically is a pie I guess?) so I had to open this.
Yes, it does show a bit more ripeness that I truly care for, but it gladly doesn't go way over the top so I did actually quite enjoy it. But it still seems young and needs a couple hours air to get it going. Nice, perhaps even very nice, but not the best Foillard I've had.
Am I the only Beaujolais-fan that hasn't fallen in love with 2009s? Everyone else seems to praise them, but I must confess that even such favourite producers as Foillard have been a little underwhelming and stylistically just too far in a ripe direction. I wonder if these will ever calm down? Hypothetical question now that I no longer have any.
