Crazy deal on ESJ Syrahs from 2005

by Patrick Martin » Tue Feb 25, 2014 3:58 pm

I randomly found on Wine-Searcher a screaming deal on some ESJ syrah:

2005 Edmunds St. John Syrah Parmelee-Hill for $20
2005 Edmunds St. John Syrah Wylie-Fenaughty for $20
2005 Edmunds St. John Syrah Basseti for $30

There's a large chain in Indianapolis (21st Amendment) that is dumping them. They don't ship (my in-law lives a half-mile from the closest store, so he picked up 6 of the Wylie and 3 of the Parmelee Hill for me), so you need a connection in the area, but if you do there's at least case of each left as of this morning. I can't speak for the provenance at this store, but at those prices I'm willing to gamble.

They also have the Shell and Bone white for $10!

Good deals on very good wines.
David's dad just started teaching at IU, not so far, but too much of a favor to ask to grab me some.
I'll live vicariously from others' purchases.

WLDG's own Redwinger was, I believe, partly responsible for their presence at 21st Amendment. Storage conditions there aren't wonderful, but far from tragic.

I plead total responsibility. The stores sold a fair amount of ESJ when I was there championing it to staff and customers. When I left, the bottles languished. As Mark mentioned, the storage isn't the best but if you purchase it from one of their "Wine Gallery" locations, it probably has been stored at approx. 70 degrees. They have about 1/2 their locations that are best described as "beer stores" and the storage at those type of stores is usually terrible <===avoid.

So, what? You do one good thing in your life and you want to be rewarded? Maybe reduce your parole time left, or let you go without the ankle collar?

(Seriously, I find that to be the case a distressing number of times. The ESJ is known only in geek circles so a geek brings it in; if he or she leaves, customers have no idea how good the wine is so it languishes. I still have a bottle of ESJ last century in my winerack that I got from Milwaukee---only three bottles left in the store, all dusty and still.

My local guy stopped carrying ESJ wines a long time ago..Apparently I was the only one buying them..and he was the guy that got me started on them in the first place!! I guess we were the only geeks in the area.

Yup....that time when Steve was sent to the woodshed by Parker, who should he run into there
but BobLindquist. Actually, there are some of my favorite people who have been sent to Parker's woodshed.

Not to start a Parker thread here, but what's odd is Parker was once was a champion of ESJ wines. I bought and enjoyed these wines in the 1990's due (at first) to his recommendations. I continue to thoroughly enjoy ESJ wines and they don't seem more dilute/thin/French than they once did.

James,

Last time I began a sentence with "LuAnne, I won't allow you to..." I regained consciousness three days later in a van down by the river. :) My wife doesn't so much ask permission as she simply seizes command. I know my limits.

The ESJ 05s from Indy were delivered today, 6 Wylie-Fenaughty and 3 Parmelee-Hill.

All look good, with perfect fills and labels, spinning capsules and ideal corks (no protrusion nor depression). I'll let them settle in for a few weeks and then give a Wylie a try.

both the Wylie-Fenaughty and the Parmelee-Hill are, at this point, still ridiculously young. I wish they moved a wee bit quicker, but they don't.

By the time we got to the store near us the WF was gone and only a single PH remained.

And how many of the 2001 WF did you buy when it was offered at less than $15? Probably not enough since that was the zenith of your Del Monte Pear juice infatuation.

If you are referring to my love for the many fine vintages of Dr.L I will say that I did manage to find room in my cellar for half a case of the '02 The Shadow which you so highly recommended. Unfortunately, my friends forced me to drink The Shadow rather quickly by requesting that I share it with them. They must have wanted me to free up the space for more of that sweet pear nectar. I can say conclusively that The Shadow is no Dr. L. :D
