WTN: vonSimmern Riesling ErbacherMarcobrunn '89...(short/bor

by TomHill » Mon Feb 24, 2014 9:10 pm

Tried this ystrday afternoon:
1. Langwerth vonSimmern Riesling Rheingau ErbacherMarcobrunn (QmP; Spatlese; A.P.Nr. 33045 036 90; 9%) Eltville 1989: Deep golden/burnished bronze/orange bit murkey color; slight botrytis/apricotty quite honeyed/old-R slight grapefruity/earthy quite complex nose; rather tart/tangy bit metallic/nutty/bitter very honeyed/old-R slightly off-dry slight earthy rather complex flavor; very long/lingering rather tangy/metallic slight nutty/bitter quite honeyed/old-R some botrytis/apricotty complex finish; cleary a bit compromised but still a real pleasure to drink and a good example of an old German R.

A wee BP:
1. Another wine from my stash that was stored in badly compromised storage in my garage for 15-18 yrs. The other 5 German R/Alsatian GWT were pretty badly compromised and down the drain they went. This one was still quite good drinking.

Those late '80s Von Simmern wines pretty much taste like that no matter what. Indestructible but uninspired.

Funny, back when German Rieslings were my all and everything, the one that gave me more difficulty, more irritation, was von Simmern. It was obviously capable of greatness. Had great vineyards, a well maintained estate, didn't seem to be suffering from capital...yet they were so damned inconsistent it was amazing. And you're right, often, even in the best of vintages, they were rarely beyond simply competent when they should have been so much more.

Haven't tracked them for some time now, but it sounds like they are much the same.

There have been a number of supposed revivals, but all were false hope.

Don't care much for the estate either. I hope I've drunk up my limited holdings.
