TN - 2009 Marsannay

by James Roscoe » Sat Feb 22, 2014 10:45 am

2009 Domaine Philippe Charlopin-Parizot Marsannay "Les Echezots" This was a beautiful wine which was opened about an hour before dinner of duck breast in cherry reduction sauce with sides of fresh asparagus and parsley buttered potatoes. There was bread and salad as well. the wine was deeply red color. Dare I call it burgundy? The nose was all fresh cherries with some blackcurrants and cocoa in the background. It tasted equally of nice fresh cherries and raspberries with undertones of cocoa and earthy in an almost mushroom quality. The tannins were nice and soft as one would expect of a young pinot noir. It finished with a nice spicy flavor of cinnamon and clove with a touch of white pepper while retaining the fruit. I would have liked to have let this sit and mellow for a few hours as I think this wine would have been rewarded by a few years of cellaring. It's a very nice wine to drink right now. It went very well with the duck breast.

Marsannay can be a relative bargain in the hunt for affordable red Burgundies. This sounds like a good one.

The '09 Louis Latour Marsannay is a very pretty wine, and I have run across a few bottles lately. we went through a case about a year ago. It is not a big wine, but very aromatic, with a nice finish. Noteworthy! I've seen it lately for about $18. The '11 edition was also a decent value.
